Spring Break Mission Trip

Fort Worth, TX
March 19-27, 2004

This is the current building of San Pablo United Methodist Church.  It is just a house, but they have outgrown it since their congregation is getting bigger.  The girls stayed here while we worked on the new church.

This is the new church building.  They have been working on it for five years.  We did a lot of dry walling and mudding inside the church.

This is the inside of the new church building before we started.  A lot of work was already completed.  Some of the people from the congregation worked with us each day.

This is the shed that is used for storage.  The boys were stored here during our week of service. Here is the sign showing the days and times of services for the Church.  The church is a Hispanic church and is located in a Hispanic neighborhood.

These are pictures of Heritage United Methodist Church.  We stayed here on Friday night.  It was in Van Buren, Arkansas.  We don't really know the significance of the shoes in the tree, but it was an interesting sight that some of us saw.

This is outside the restaurant we ate lunch at on Saturday.

On Sunday, we worshiped with the people of San Pablo UMC.  Above, Pastor Munos is performing a baptism.  We also learned "La Alegria" which is a Spanish song and sang it to the congregation.   They really enjoyed it and asked us to sing it again later in the week.

Above left: Pastor Munos giving the sermon.  Juanita helped translate it into English so we could understand.  Above right:  A little girl in the church.  Bottom left:  Paul, Bethany and Ashley getting food.  The people there cooked a lot of meals for us and they were all delicious!  Bottom right:  Scott & Diane

Sunday night we went to a Steak House for supper.  This is a picture of our group.

On Monday, we began to dig a hole so we could set a basketball goal there.  Notice on the top left picture where the hole is that Casey and Bethany have started.  Then look at the top right picture.  The first hole had to be filled in because it was too far away from the curb and we had to start over.  This was not an easy task because the ground was layers of rock (bottom right).

Bethany is finally taller than Casey!

This is in the sanctuary of the new church.  There was just a little bit of dry wall to put up.  The top two pictures show before and the bottom left is after we had finished it.  Bottom right:  Tony & Diane

This is inside the new church.  We put up drywall all the way to the ceiling on this wall.

Top left:  There was a pile of sand beside the church, so we enclosed it with old railroad ties to make a sandbox for the kids.  Top right:  Joel mowing

Below left:  We had some edging that we put around a tree.  Leslie, Diane & Kara are digging so they can put it down.  Bottom right:  The boys decided to come and help.

Top left:  We had a wheelbarrow full of the dirt we'd taken out from around the tree.  Leslie went to dump it but got off balance.  This is the end result.  Top right:  Joel giving Leslie a ride back in the wheelbarrow.  Below:  The tree after we finished.  We also planted flowers around it.

Top left:  Beth, Leslie, Kara, Casey & Bethany after a hard days work.  Top right:  Jenny and Kara washing their hair with the hose.

Who did we take the trip through?
We took the trip through the Volunteers In Mission (VIM) program of the United Methodist Church.

Why do we go on mission trips?

To share the love of Christ by service through word and deed.

To learn about other people and cultures, remembering that all of us are created in God's image.

To grow together as a body of believers, strengthening one another in faith and building relationships within our group.
